More than 130 senior executives of financial services firms as well as representatives of the Ministry of Finance and the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission participated to the successful Annual General Meeting of ACIIF, which took place Wednesday, 23 January 2019 in Limassol. Keynote speakers at the event were the Minister of Finance Mr. Harris Georgiades and the Chairwoman of the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (‘CySEC’) Ms. Demetra Kalogerou.
On behalf of the Minister of Finance, the head of the Directorate of Financial Stability of the Ministry of Finance Dr. Andreas Charalambous focused on the current macroeconomic environment in Cyprus and the challenges ahead, the international financial sector in Cyprus and its prospects and the government policies to support the sector.
CySEC Chairwoman Ms. Demetra Kalogerou stated among others that investment firms across the European Union face increasing compliance requirements, particularly following the implementation of MiFID II and MIFIR. This landmark legislation will help enhance transparency and improve investor protection. One of the key focuses for supervision in 2019 and beyond will be measuring and enforcing full compliance with these new requirements.
On behalf of ACIIF, its Chairman Dr. Stelios Platis stressed the continuous efforts of ACIIF to protect and promote the interests of its members and the financial sector overall as a safe, efficient and business-friendly jurisdiction. At the same time, he thanked the Minister of Finance and CySEC Chairwoman for their stance and support to ACIIF and its members and the understanding they exhibit throughout the years for financial services matters.
